Visual Arts

An Arts Destination

Studies in the visual arts are central to the advancement of contemporary culture. By educating the next wave of artists, teachers, and designers who achieve creative and scholarly excellence in their chosen fields, Buffalo State increases social awareness, promotes visual literacy, and engages the community in cultural dialogue.

Buffalo State's visual arts programs were ranked 13th on College Database’s “Top 50 U.S. Colleges Where Art Programs Abound” list. The website ranked Buffalo State ahead of Cornell and Yale and just behind the University of Southern California. The college offers a number of visual arts programs that can't be found at any other SUNY school, including communication design, fibers, metals/jewelry, and wood/furniture.



The National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) accredited Buffalo State’s visual arts programs in 2007. They affirmed that our programs meet national standards for helping students achieve success in the visual arts.

  • The interior design program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation
  • The college’s Burchfield Penney Art Center is accredited by the American Association of Museums
  • Buffalo State is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, 3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104; (215) 662-5606. The Commission on Higher Education is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. secretary of education and the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation. The college also is accredited by the Board of Regents, University of the State of New York.
